WebI run 5 hubs and no issues. Most are quite old. I have never heard of a hub failing and I have configured dozens for family, friends and coworkers. Usb cables or bricks could be the problem. Once I plugged in my hub with a USB cable in the the USB port on my dvr. Hub powered up but got the red light. I guess the port was under powered.
